For Dr. Raha Yousefi, periodontics wasn't a career she stumbled into—it was a passion she discovered through firsthand experience. Today, as the owner of multiple successful dental practices, a dedicated educator, and the mother of four energetic boys, she has built a career rooted in continuous learning, leadership, and exceptional patient care.
Dr. Yousefi specializes in periodontics and serves patients through District Dental Surgery, with periodontal practice locations in Washington, DC, and Bethesda, Maryland. In addition to caring for patients, she volunteers as part of the Dean's Faculty at the University of Maryland, mentoring periodontal residents on the clinic floor and helping shape the next generation of specialists.
Interestingly, dentistry wasn't always part of Dr. Yousefi's plan. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. After college, however, she began working as a front desk administrator in her father's dental practice while considering a career in business. It didn't take long for her to realize that her true interest wasn't at the front desk—it was in the operatory, working directly with patients and the clinical team.
"I went to dental school knowing I wanted to be a periodontist," she shares.
That clarity of purpose has guided an impressive professional journey. Just two years after completing her periodontal residency, Dr. Yousefi was presented with the opportunity to purchase her first periodontal practice—an exciting milestone made even better by finding herself practicing next door to Dr. Neil Starr.
Only a year later, she expanded her entrepreneurial journey by purchasing her father's general dental practice, where associate dentists now provide patient care. Six years after that, she acquired another periodontal practice, bringing her total practice ownership to two periodontal offices and one general dentistry practice.
Her accomplishments extend well beyond business ownership. Between 2015 and 2021, Dr. Yousefi welcomed four sons while simultaneously acquiring three dental practices—an extraordinary balance of family life and professional growth that reflects her dedication, resilience, and commitment to building both a thriving career and a fulfilling home life.
When asked what advice she would offer to those beginning their careers in dentistry,
Dr. Yousefi emphasizes the importance of surrounding yourself with excellence.
"Surround yourself with quality dentists, go to quality meetings, and keep learning."
It's advice that reflects her own philosophy of lifelong education, mentorship, and professional development.
Outside the office, Dr. Yousefi enjoys spending time with her family, and with four boys, there's rarely a dull moment. Whether she's cooking, traveling, or simply embracing the daily adventures of family life, she values the experiences that help her recharge and stay connected to what matters most.
Looking ahead, there's one question she enjoys asking fellow dental professionals:
"What will you do when you retire?"
It's a thoughtful reminder that while dentistry is a rewarding profession, it's also important to build a life filled with passions, relationships, and experiences beyond the practice.
